destiny the traveller

Bungie tears Halo a new one with sci-fi shooter Destiny.

Dropships? Check. Insectoid alien thingies? Check. Space-based megastructures popped out of nowhere? Check. Must be a Bungie game.

Announced just before Christmas last year, Destiny’s story is reminiscent of recent MMOFPS and TV series Defiance. Aliens arrive at Earth, humans get trounced, and player begins game amid the resulting desolate wasteland. Except Destiny is adding a touch of the mystical to proceedings with its eerie hovering globe, known as The Traveler.

Destiny takes is set many centuries in the future. Battles are fought on Earth, Mars and a strangely jungle-filled Venus, implying that some hectic terraforming of our nearest planetary neighbours must have happened before the game’s apocalyptic alien invasion struck. Bungie’s vision of the future looks impressive in scope, but disappointingly tired in its use of gurning alien behemoths and space marine humans.

Watch the Destiny gameplay trailer for yourself below, and do try not to draw too many Halo analogies.

Bungie confirmed at E3 that Destiny is set to hit current and next-gen Xbox and PlayStation in 2014.
