apple controller iOS

Apple takes on Ouya, Android, Nintendo and everybody else in the gaming space.

Two controller designs certified for use with iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 have leaked from developer documentation issued by Apple. iOS 7 was revealed earlier this week at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, where game controller support was confirmed.

The controller specifications were made available by Apple on its developer site and posted Tuesday to an iOS gaming forum thread on Neogaf. Both designs seem legitimate.

Apple is specifying that games made for use with the authorised controller specs have to be compatible with the traditional iOS touchscreen interface too. Manufacturers will be able to alter the design of the controller, however, and the API will cope.

One of the controllers, GCGamepad, appears to be designed to fit around an iPhone, adding handheld-like buttons and a d-pad.

The second controller type, GCExtendedGamepad, more closely resembles an industry-standard console gamepad configuration, and features analogue sticks and extra buttons.

Scope out the designs for official Apple iPhone and iPad controllers below.
